FOIA and Access to Public Meetings and Records in Maine
1. Maine Public Records and Proceedings.
The Maine Public Records and Proceedings Act (above link) defines what is meant by public records and proceedings, specifies that public meetings must be open to the public (with notice beforehand), and sets forth the right of all persons to inspect and copy written public records.
Access to federal public records is governed by the Freedom of Information Act ("FOIA" at above link). As the FOIA statute is quite daunting, The U.S. Department of Justice maintains a helpful FOIA Reference Guide, as well as a list of Principal FOIA Contacts at Federal Agencies.
