Mesothelioma is a rare disease typically associated with exposure to asbestos (in up to 80 percent of all reported mesothelioma cases, a history of asbestos exposure occurred). Mesothelioma can result, often decades later, from even insignificant exposure to asbestos in mills, mines, ship yards, older Navy ships and elsewhere. Family members of workers exposed to asbestos can also contact mesothelioma through exposure to a worker's clothing. About 2,000 new cases of mesothelioma are reported in the United States each year.
