There is one federal district court in Vermont.  On the state level, the Vermont court system consists of seven State courts.  These are the Supreme Court, the Superior Court, the District Court, the Family Court, the Probate Court, the Environmental Court and the Vermont Judicial Bureau.

Superior Courts in Vermont have exclusive jurisdiction over most civil cases.  There is one superior court in each of Vermont's fourteen counties.  All Superior Courts have statewide jurisdiction.

District Courts in Vermont hear nearly all criminal cases.  The District Courts also hear some civil cases, namely, civil suspension, fish and wildlife violations and appeals of traffic ticket and municipal ordinance violation decisions.  There is a District Court in each of Vermont's fourteen counties.

The Family Courts in Vermont hear all family related legal matters.  These include divorce and annulment, child support, domestic abuse and juvenile matters.  There is a Family Court in each of Vermont's fourteen counties.

 

Vermont Probate Courts

Vermont Probate Courts have jurisdiction over such matters as the administration of estates and trusts, guardianship and custody proceedings, and vital records such as name changes.  There is a Probate Court in each of Vermont's fourteen counties, though four counties (Bennington, Rutland, Windham and Windsor) have two such courts.

The Vermont Environmental Court has jurisdiction over requests to enforce and review administrative orders issued by the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources.  It also hears appeals of zoning and planning decisions.

Vermont Judicial Bureau

The Vermont Judicial Bureau has jurisdiction over traffic tickets and other such civil violation complaints, municipal ordinance violations, fish and wildlife violations, hazing citations and matters involving possession of alcohol by minors.
